I'm Mrs Kaur, Balvinder's mother and I've been in England since about 1970, when I came here to marry my husband. We come from a place called the Punjab in India, near a big city called Jullunder.
My husband came here three years before me because the railways were advertising in India for people to come to Britain and work for them. His father and uncles' had worked for the British in India all their lives, either on the railways or, like my father, in the army. My husband always worked on the railways as a train engineer until he died of a heart attack in 1990, when Balvinder was 6. I work as a teacher in a junior school.
